Physical Conditioning
Though many of us consider skiing and snowboarding simply winter recreation, it can be a very demanding athletic sport even for the novice as well. Depending on your skill level and how hard you challenge yourself, some pre-conditioning can be helpful in ensuring you stay healthy and happy on the slopes. Please take the time to read the hints from the National Ski Patrol to get the most from your Ski Apache experience.
Aerobicize and Anaerobicize
In most snow sports, it's helpful to build a strong base of aerobic fitness. Its what's going to allow you to be on the hill longer and reduce your chance of injury due to fatigue. Skiing and snowboarding are anaerobic activities as well. This means they require short, intense bursts of energy interspersed with rest periods.
Flexibility
Stretching is the one aspect of pre-season training that should be done every day. Try a program which combines flexibility and movement exercises to increase your balance and coordination for the maximum range of motion.
Strength Training
Preseason training should also include some weight training. Some consider strength as the key to snow sports. The stronger you are, the less you have to try to hold yourself up to make the moves. |
