Frequently Asked Questions

What is the adaptive school program?
Ski Apache Disabled Skiers’ Program offers one-on-one instruction to students with disabilities one-day-a-week for a six-week block.

What are the dates?
The school program will begin the week of January 15th, 2006 and ends the first week of March.

Who is eligible?
Any student with a physical and / or cognitive disability is eligible. SADSP specializes in equipment to enable paraplegic, quadriplegic, visually impaired, hearing impaired, amputee and developmentally disabled students. SADSP also has professional and volunteer instructors with training in various methods and equipment available.

What does the program cost?
The program costs $40.00 for the six-week program and includes lessons, equipment and a lift ticket.  Volunteers are expected to furnish their own equipment, but lift tickets are complimentary.

What if a student cannot afford the cost of the program?
SADSP is a not-for-profit organization and no student is turned away due to financial limitations.

What if a student or volunteer cannot make a ski day?
Since instruction is one-on-one, it is imperative that SADSP be notified of cancellations in advance by calling 336-4416 during the day or 336-4061 in the evenings.

Who is eligible to volunteer?
SADSP trains approximately 100 instructors a year. Schools are encouraged to parties about the program and volunteering possibilities. SADSP advertises for volunteers through local media but word of mouth is often more effective. Volunteers should be intermediate skiers or snowboarders but no other experience or qualifications are required.

What is involved in becoming a volunteer?
Safety is a primary concern. SADSP requires one weekend of required training. Volunteers learn how to teach beginner students based on a Professional Ski Instructors of America progression.  Personal skiing techniques, communication skills and details of various disabilities are covered.

What if a volunteer does not know how to ski, but wants to volunteer?
SADSP requires non-skiing volunteers to take two days of lessons through Ski Apache. A two-day package is available. Call (505) 336-4356 for details.

What are the volunteer training dates?
The two weekends set aside for training are January 6th and 7th or 13th and 14th. If enough volunteers are interested in training on other dates, SADSP can accommodate other dates.

What about the race?
The Adaptive Ski Race will be on East Easy Street in early March. Students are matched by abilities in small enough groups that every skier receives a medal. This race has been the regional games for Special Olympics in the past, and we are working closely with New Mexico Special Olympics to increase the number of racers which would make this the only statewide winter event open to any person with a disability.

What if I have questions?
SADSP has an office in the Gondola building at Ski Apache and is open every day during ski season. The phone number at the office is 336-4416. In the off season and during the evenings, you may call Marty Davenport 336-4061.
