Adaptive Ski Program Overview

Mission Statement
To provide ski and snowboard instruction to any person with a disability, regardless of the type or the extent of disability or financial limitations.

Vision Statement
To be the regional leader and a nationwide force in disabled skiing instruction, equipment development, outreach and advocacy on behalf of disabled skiers throughout the United States, Mexico and beyond.

Ski Apache’s Adaptive Ski program offers learn-to-ski programs for students of all ages with a variety of disabilities in Alpine, Nordic and Snowboarding disciplines. Our motto is "Teaching all with Physical and Cognitive Disabilities" and our Program is a not for profit organization registered as a charitable organization in the state of New Mexico.

This wonderful program is also known as the “Ski Apache Disabled Skiers Program” or SADSP. We invite students from the region’s adaptive schools to come once a week during ski season and experience the wonders of winter’s most exciting sport. Our excellent, mostly volunteer, instructors work hard to gain the trust of these inspiring youngsters. The dedication of these instructors ensures the Program’s current and future success.

SADSP is teaching an increasing number of paraplegic and quadriplegic and others with more involved disabilities … students often turned away from other programs. As the largest on-site program in New Mexico, SADSP is able to accommodate people with disabilities who may have never considered skiing as a recreational sport.

At the end of each season the kids participate in a down hill slalom race complete with the gates, bells and timers. This is a big event for everyone as it gives the instructors and their charges a chance to show off how well they can navigate the slopes. To quote Philip, a past Program student from New Mexico's School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Alamogordo, it is “Awesome!”

SADSP continues to evolve but one thing that will never change is the commitment of the instructors and volunteers to provide the best instruction to any person with a disability who wishes to be taught. Ski Apache Ski Resort has made this Program possible and SADSP looks forward to continuing this relationship for many years to come.
